Songbirds Program Takes Flight

In August 2021, Phoenix-Talent School District asked Rogue World Music for help bringing music enrichment to all (900+) students in their 3 elementary schools for the 2021-2022 school year. We were thrilled to assist!

"The Orchard Hill students have been captivated by the engaging lessons. The curriculum speaks to the children and introduces them to a world that is full of curiosity. What a wonderful experience!"  ~ Curt Shenk, Orchard Hill Elementary Principal

The program teaches music as a life skill using call & response, play, mimicry, dance, movement, body percussion, and storytelling. Participation is scalable, making it inclusive for everyone! After a year of instruction across the school district, students are showing that this form of music education is inspiring and FUN!

"All students were participating at levels that were comfortable for them in terms of singing, movement, rhythm, etc. Students were also making connections between the music, the cultural context, and the teaching stories with stories they knew from their home culture or literature that they learning in their language arts classes." ~ Yvonne Byers, Phoenix Elementary teacher

"My daughters now come home and run outside to sing and dance with the other kids in their neighborhood." ~ Rebecca Weathers, Phoenix-Talent School Board Member.

At the end of the school year, we held two Songbird Family Sing nights, bringing together the students and families from all 3 Phoenix-Talent elementary schools for an evening of singing and dancing together!

Phoenix Family Sing Night.

Singing brings out some good feelings!

"This will hopefully be our first of many evenings like this. The smiles on families' faces as they sang, listened to stories, created crafts, and connected in our garden space said it all. Seeing people connect in this way was a true bucket filler during this busy time of year. PES is so thankful to our community partners for helping us create the experiences that bring people together. It was simply lovely." ~ Shawna Schleif, Phoenix Elementary Principal
